Identify the housing before comparing references
A spin-on oil filter is replaced as an enclosed assembly that screws onto its mounting point. A cartridge arrangement uses a removable element inside a housing that remains on the vehicle. Follow the vehicle manual to identify which arrangement is fitted; catalog number patterns alone do not establish the housing details.
Compare the checks for each format
| Check | Spin-on assembly | Cartridge element |
|---|---|---|
| Mounting | Documented thread, gasket location and mounting clearance. | Element shape, end faces, locating features and housing clearance. |
| Sealing | Correct gasket and seating surface; check that the removed gasket has not stayed on the mount. | Correct seals and O-rings in the manual's specified positions; inspect the housing and cover. |
| Operating requirements | Confirm the specified valve arrangement and other requirements where documented; exterior dimensions are insufficient. | Confirm the housing and element requirements in the service documentation; do not infer them from appearance. |
| Service procedure | Use the manual and the filter instructions for lubrication, tightening and leak checks. | Use the manual for element orientation, seal replacement and cover tightening. |
The vehicle's lubrication system determines the required filter. A matching thread, outer diameter or housing height does not confirm the full specification. These pages do not provide vehicle-specific installation instructions.
Real UCH and Hiflo number examples
These entries illustrate how UCH and Hiflo numbers are recorded. They are number examples only, not a fitment list, a verified format classification or evidence that the three filters are interchangeable.
| UCH reference | Hiflo cross reference |
|---|---|
| UO1002 | HF202 |
| UO1004 | HF204 |
| UO2002 | HF133 |
OEM and Hiflo numbers are cross references. Verify the exact vehicle year and dimensions before ordering.
An application-count note is not a vehicle-by-vehicle fitment record. Ask for the exact model and year check even if a reference is described as having many applications.
Before removing the old filter
- Confirm the replacement reference and required seals before starting work.
- Follow the OEM manual for safe access, oil handling, element orientation and tightening; no generic torque or service interval is assumed here.
- Check the old sealing surface and account for removed seals so that a second gasket or misplaced O-ring is not left behind.
- Use the manual's refill and leak-check procedure. If a sealing or specification detail remains uncertain, resolve it before returning the vehicle to service.
