Start with the exact element's instructions
Check the OEM manual and the instructions for the installed filter. A housing may contain dry paper, treated paper, foam or another construction. A panel outline describes a shape, and a metal support describes part of the structure; neither identifies the cleaning method.
If the media, cleaning method or service limit is not documented, mark it UNKNOWN and request the instructions. Do not infer washability from a photo or transfer a cleaning method from another element.
Paper elements: inspect before deciding to clean
Inspect the pleats and sealing edge for damage, distortion, moisture or contamination. For a disposable paper element, replacement follows the manual's condition checks and schedule. Do not assume that water, solvent, oil or compressed air is an approved way to restore it; use a cleaning method only when the exact element's instructions permit it.
A clean-looking surface does not establish remaining service life. Check the full element and seal, and follow the OEM manual for inspection and replacement in the vehicle's operating conditions.
Foam elements: washable is a product-specific instruction
Some foam systems have a defined cleaning and re-oiling procedure; others have different requirements or are not intended for reuse. Confirm that the exact element is serviceable before washing it. When cleaning is authorized, use only the specified cleaner, drying method and oiling procedure.
Avoid making assumptions about solvents, heat, wringing, drying time or the amount and type of filter oil. Follow the element and OEM instructions, inspect for tears, crumbling or failed bonds, and replace an element that no longer meets its documented condition limits.
Check the seal and airbox as well as the media
- Follow the manual for access and removal, and keep loose dirt from entering the clean side of the intake.
- Inspect the sealing lip, airbox seating surface, cover and retaining features. A clean element with a damaged or poorly seated seal still needs attention.
- Refit the exact element and cover as instructed. Do not force a similar-looking filter into the housing.
- Record the service date and observations. Use the OEM schedule and any documented guidance for dusty or wet use; this guide does not assign a universal distance or time interval.
What the UCH catalog tells you
UCH catalog styles include metal-type, panel, foam and pod references. These labels help navigation. They do not supply cleaning approval, filtration ratings or a replacement interval. Compare the OEM cross reference, exact vehicle year, dimensions and seal, then request the service instructions for the selected element.
